Your carpets represent a sizable investment. Like any major item that you own it makes sense to properly care for your carpets in order to get the maximum usable life out of them. Most carpet made today does not wear out, it “ugly’s” out. Carpets develop a dirty, dingy traffic pattern that does not disappear even after they are cleaned. What causes this and how can it best be prevented?
The majority of carpet made in the U.S. is made from synthetic fibers such as; nylon, polyester, and olefin. These fibers are basically a plastic. Synthetic fibers, especially nylon and the new PET type polyesters are an excellent choice for durability and long term beauty. However, the fibers can be scratched and damaged. Think of a clear Plexiglas that works as a window. Then imagine that same Plexiglas after someone takes sandpaper and scratches over the entire surface. It would no longer make a good window. This in effect is what happens to your carpet.
Over 80% of the foreign material in your carpet is insoluble sand, grit, clay, hair, pet dander, etc. The sand and grit act like sandpaper to scratch the fibers of your carpet. As the fibers are scratched and damaged they are no longer able to reflect the light like they did when new. In time those damaged fibers cause the dull, ugly traffic pattern.
Here are the things you can do to prolong the life of your carpet:
- Always use mats, both outside and inside at entry doors. The majority of dirt and grit in your carpet is tracked in from outside the home.
- Remove your shoes when you come into the house.
- Vacuum with a good quality vacuum regularly. Vacuum all carpet at least once per week. High traffic areas (especially with kids and pets) may need to be vacuumed as often as once per day. Vacuum high traffic areas slowly and repeat at different angles.
- Keep your vacuum maintained; the bag should not be over ½ full, the filters must be clean, the brush roller needs to be in good condition.
- Clean up spills immediately and thoroughly. If you can’t get the stain out using an over the counter spot/stain remover call a professional for help. Do not leave stains for months or years, this increases the chance that they will become permanent.
- Change the furniture around from time to time. Changing the traffic pattern will prolong the life of your carpet.
- Have your carpets professionally cleaned on a regular schedule. Carpets will build up oil and grease residue over time. This residue attracts dirt. Vacuuming alone will not eliminate this residue. Do Not wait until your carpet looks dirty and in need of professional cleaning. That is like waiting for the oil light in your car to come on before you check the oil. By the time the light comes on, the damage is done.
