If at all possible it is important to quickly grab a cotton towel or quality paper towels and absorb as much of the moisture as possible. Gently press the towel down until you have absorbed as much moisture as is possible. Next flush the area with cool clean water and continue to blot up as much moisture as possible. Finally, prepare a mixture of one part water to three parts white vinegar. Flush the stain again with this mixture and blot until no more moisture is transferred to the towel.
If you still see a trace of stain, sprinkle a heavy dose of baking soda on the moist stain and allow to dwell until completely dry. The baking soda will act as a poultice to draw out the last of the moisture and the stain. It will leave your carpet smelling fresher too. When completely dry just collect the excess baking soda and then vacuum.
