How Much To Clean My Carpet?
What should you expect to pay to have quality, professional carpet cleaning? Some carpet cleaners charge by the square foot, some may quote you on a per room basis. Either way you may need to look a little deeper into what you are actually being quoted.
Pre-vacuum:
The industry standards organization for professional carpet cleaners is the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification, (IICRC). The standard procedure for any professional carpet cleaning is to begin with a thorough vacuuming to remove all dry solids from the soil. Many carpet cleaners will skip this step to save time and money on a job. As a consumer you should expect your carpet cleaner to adhere to the industry standards in their cleaning procedures.
Spot and stain removal:
Many carpet cleaners will throw out a price on the phone with no knowledge of your particular situation. Even if you have not had your carpets cleaned for many years you expect a professional cleaner to take the time to remove spots and most, if not all stains. In many cases this is an extra step that will take significantly more time and effort. Going over spots and stains once or twice with a steam wand will not be sufficient to remove many stains. A carpet cleaner cannot properly quote this extra effort over the phone.
Professional cleaning frequency:
Quoting a price per room or by square foot without previewing the job does not take into account the factors that really matter in getting a truly professional result. How long has it been since your last professional cleaning? Do you have pets, how many? Do you have pet stains and noticeable odors? How many people live in your home? Do you have a habit of removing your shoes when you come into the house?
Let’s face it, a retired couple who are clean freaks and have their carpets cleaned religiously once per year, have a very different situation than the family with four kids, three dogs, and a cat, and have not had their carpets cleaned in over five years. These two jobs should not be priced the same, even if they have exactly the same number of rooms and square footage. Just common sense.
If you know your home is in dire need of a VERY thorough and professional carpet cleaning, make sure the company comes to your home and inspects the job first hand. Ask the technician what their cleaning process will be. It should include a vacuuming, pre-spotting and treating spots and stains, more time spent in high traffic areas, post vacuuming or grooming of the carpet. If they are using hot water extraction they should have plenty of fans to aid in faster drying of the carpet. The quicker the carpet dries, the less likely to have stains wick back up.
Ask what results they can guarantee. If stains or spots reappear will they come back and remove them at no additional charge?
Reputation is everything:
I can’t count the number of customers that have told me “the last guy” made the carpet look better at first, but within a few days the spots were back and the carpet looked pretty much the same as before it was cleaned. Shopping for the lowest price, or grabbing the “three room deal” will only save you money if your carpets don’t require ANY special attention. These guys have to be in and out quick to make money. Whatever you pay them is wasted if your carpet looks the same as before the cleaning within a week or two.
At Crystal Clean Carpets our reputation is everything. We take the time to do the job right. We are not the highest price guys in town. But we are not the low priced guys either. Our low moisture cleaning method prevents spots from wicking back. However, if the spot comes back…so do we.
