With traditional hot water extraction (so called steam cleaning) of carpet it is not uncommon to have stains reappear a few days or a couple of weeks after cleaning. There are two primary reasons for this.
First, by design hot water extraction soaks your carpet. The high volume water pressure sprayed into the carpet can drive dirt down to the backing. Of course as the technician attempts to vacuum up all of this water an appreciable amount of water is left in your carpet. Hence the 6-12 hour drying times. As the carpet dries it tends to draw (wick) this dirt up from the backing of the carpet to be deposited again on your fibers.
A second cause is common also with the do-it-yourself machines that homeowners rent. This occurs when the professional technician or the homeowner uses a soap solution to clean the carpet. Because all of the soapy water cannot be vacuumed out of the carpet a soap residue is left as the carpet dries. This sticky soap will attract dirt, especially in areas previously stained. Within a couple of weeks the carpet looks as bad as, or worse than ever. This is why some homeowners have the impression that once you steam clean your carpet it will always resoil faster and will never be as good as new when it comes to stains.
